Single Person Discount Review

Single Person Discount Review

We are working with NEC to conduct a review of Council Tax accounts where a single person discount has been claimed.

This is to ensure that residents are receiving the correct amount of discount and to ensure that our records are accurate.

Who are NEC?

NEC provides services in revenues and benefits processing work for many local authorities throughout the country. NEC has a dedicated and specialist team of experienced council tax officers to carry out discount reviews. The law allows for the contracting out of council tax functions.

Why have you received a review letter

If you have received a review letter, it means you are currently claiming a 25% single person discount as the only adult resident at your address. We have a duty to review this to ensure that your circumstances haven’t changed and that you still qualify for this discount.

What you need to do

The quickest and most convenient way to make your declaration is to go to https://www.spd-review.co.uk/milton-keynes, you will need to enter the code shown on your letter.

You will not be eligible for the single person discount if:

  1. there is more than one person over the age of 18 living at your address
  2.  someone stays at your address regularly (and has no main residence elsewhere, keeps their belongings at your address or uses your address for post.)
  3. This is not your main home, for example you stay at this property for work purposes but have a main home elsewhere in which your family live permanently.

Other discounts that might apply

It may be that you no longer qualify for the single person discount due to a child turning 18 years old. However, if the young person is:

  • still at school
  • has only just left full time education
  • or is at college or university

then we may be able to apply a different discount to your account.

View more or make an application on our other discounts and exemptions page.

If you don’t complete the review

We will send you a reminder letter 2 weeks after the first letter, giving you a further 4 weeks to complete the review.

If you do not complete a review, we will assume that your circumstances have changed and will remove your discount and issue a new bill.

If you have already informed us about a change

Still complete the review and include all details of the changes.

Fraudulent discount claims

Claiming a discount when you know that you are not entitled to is fraud and you can be prosecuted for this.

You must tell us if your circumstances change, and you are no longer entitled to a discount.

Fraudulent claims for discounts increase the costs for every Council Tax payer.

If you can’t complete the review online

If you do not have internet access, you can do any of the following:

  • Call 01908 475223, the operator will ask for the account number detailed on your letter

    Or

  • Complete and sign the declaration on the review letter you have been sent and return to the address provided. Please remember to affix a stamp to the envelope.
