The Who's in Charge programme is run by the Youth Offending Team and consists of 10 core sessions with the option of adding 2 of 9 additional sessions as per the needs of the group.
Who might be suitable for the programme?
The Who's in Charge programme is designed for parents and carers of teenagers who are misbehaving or causing difficulties within the family.
MKYOT are open to referrals from MKC CSC and CFP, although parents whose children are known to the criminal justice system or are at risk of becoming involved in antisocial behaviour or offending will be prioritised.
If there is more than one parent or carer involved in caring for the child(ren), it can be useful to encourage both to attend, as this may help to address any conflict in parenting styles that there might be, although you will need to let us know of any potential risk issues for any referral made to the programme.
Explaining the structure and maintaining parents’ interest
From delivering the programme we have found that although there is a potential for parents to become frustrated with the fact that work around the misbehaviour of their children does not happen until session 5, it is vital for parents to understand the fundamentals such as listening skills, their own behaviour and developing a more positive relationship with their children before they can challenge the misbehaviour.
Please note that it is expected that you will have spoken to the parents you are referring to the programme in advance to ensure they are interested in attending.
If you have any further questions about the content of the programme or possible referrals, please contact Zoe Cragg: 01908 254599 at the Youth Offending Team.
