We have the third highest total provision of public EV chargers, the highest total provision of rapid and above chargers (50kW+) and the highest quantity of said chargers per 100,000 residents in the UK (DfT, 2023).
As of September 2024, there are 956 public charging outlets with another 76 being installed by April 2025. This is alongside our network expansion programme to meet our forecasted need for charging as estimated by government. This includes Fast, Rapid and Ultra-Rapid chargers. Our charging partners operate payment schemes that offer pay as you go or for more regular users, subscription schemes that may be more cost effective.
From time to time, we receive requests from our tenants to fit EV charge points to properties. When we receive requests to install chargers, we will direct the tenant to our charging partners and webpages that have more information on where to charge. This is because we have to make sure our resources are focused on providing safe and affordable to heat homes.
The work required to manage and process installation requests, along with what happens when tenancies end, is quite a lot. In all cases this would take housing resource, and, in some cases, we would incur costs of resolving issues and making good when things go wrong. MKCC considers the installation of chargers to our council homes is not core to our provision of safe, affordable to heat council homes at the moment.
For tenants who have a mobility or disability which is linked to an EV charge request, please get in touch with Adult Services. More information can be found on Equipment, Adaptations and Community Occupational Therapy webpage. We will continue to keep this approach under review, particularly as technology advances and our city wide network of chargers grows.
