The Council is currently reviewing its policy on medicals for existing licence holders.  Current Council policy states:

Licence holders must be re-examined to the Group 2 standards at the age of 45 and every 5 years thereafter until they reach the age of 65.  After the age of 65 licence holders must submit evidence of having been assessed to meet the Group 2 medical requirements on an annual basis.

The Council is considering, but not limited to, the following proposals:

1. Leaving the existing policy unchanged.
2. Removing the 45 year threshold requirement and require all licence holders to complete a Group 2 medical every 5 years until the age of 65.  Then require a medical on an annual basis after that.  (as recommended by the Department for Transport)
3. Remove the 45 year threshold requirement and require all licence holders to complete a Group 2 medical every 3 years (on renewal) until the age of 65.  Then require a medical on an annual basis after that.
4. Remove the 45 year threshold requirement and require all licence holders to complete a Group 2 medical every 5 years after until the age of 70.  Then require a medical on an annual basis after that.
5. Remove the 45 year threshold requirement and require all licence holders to complete a Group 2 medical every 3 years on renewal until the age of 70.  Then require a medical on an annual basis after that.

These are only proposals at this stage. If you think there are better ways for the us to implement this policy please let us know.

These proposals and any further proposals as a result of this consultation, will be considered by the Regulatory Committee on 18 September 2023.  

This will be followed by further consideration and a final decision by the Council’s Executive in October/November 2023. These meetings will be open to both the public and licence holders.
