How do I re-register my child(ren)'s birth?
If your child was born in Milton Keynes and you want to:
- Add the natural father’s name to baby’s birth certificate you will need to compete form GRO 185*, or
- Re-register a baby’s birth following the marriage or civil partnership of the child's natural parents you will need to complete form LA1*,
* A separate form is needed for each child.
Each form includes guidance on their completion and the relevant documents you need to provide.
When you have completed the relevant form(s) and have all of the supporting documentation, you will need to book an appointment with the register office where the child(ren) are registered.

We were married abroad, is the process the same?
No, if the natural parents of the child(ren) married outside of England or Wales, an LA1 form will need to be completed for each child but the form, and the relevant supporting documentation, will need to be sent to the General Register Office, see the details on the form for information as to where these need to be sent to.
The General Register Office will process the application and will inform you when the authority to re-register has been sent the register office where the child(ren)'s birth(s) were registered. If this is Milton Keynes, you can book your appointment online or by calling 01908 372101 when you have received this notification.

I need to add my child(ren)'s natural father and have a court order, Parental Responsibility Agreement or a Statutory Declaration of Acknowledgement of Parentage, what do I do?
If you wish to add the child(ren)'s natural father and have either a court order, Parental Responsibility Agreement or a Statutory Declaration of Acknowledgement of Parentage, you will need to complete a GRO185 form and provide certified copies of the relevant supporting documentation to the General Register Office for their consideration.

When the General Register Office have considered the application, they will inform you when an authority to re-register has been sent to the register office where the child(ren) were registered. If this is Milton Keynes, you can make an appointment to complete the re-registration process when you have received this notification.

Who needs to attend the appointment?
- If you are now married or in a civil partnership, only one parent will need to attend the appointment.
- If you are adding the natural father to a birth certificate and you are not married to each other or in a civil partnership, both parents will need to attend the appointment.
What does it cost to re-register?
It is free to re-register a child's birth, but you may wish to purchase new birth certificate(s).
