Becoming a Shared Lives Carer

Who can be a Shared Lives Carer?

Almost anybody can become a Shared Lives carer. It is all about finding the right person for you to connect with. The most important thing is that you have an interest in others, the ability to respond to the needs of those around you and good communication skills. Some people work as a Shared Lives carer in addition to other employment.

Training

When Carers express interest in Shared Lives, we assign them a Shared Lives Officer who will guide them throughout their journey. This Officer will provide the Approval Process documents and create a Personal Development Plan to address all training needs.

Shared Lives offers "Skills for Care" training, which includes the Care Certificate, to all Carers during the approval process. If Carers have prior experience in Social Care and possess relevant training certificates, these will be verified and considered during the assessment. E-Learning is available, allowing Carers to complete training at home and at their convenience. Carers will need a laptop/computer and an email address for E-Learning. Shared Lives will continue to support and monitor Carers' training needs throughout their tenure.

For those supporting individuals with additional or complex needs, such as Epilepsy, Diabetes, and Autism, bespoke training can be arranged. If specific training is required for your role, we will identify and provide it for you.
